Multi business Units

Hi everyone. Do you guys know how can I remove classes of business units? the default comes with 2. what if I want just 1? It also has been very challenging to customize the module as there are not many options for BU yet. If I want to include an amount forecast similar to the Generic 1 where I can see the last value of the historical month, how can I do that? Even if I unmirrow the Units keep showing I should formulate anything there.

Hi Natalia,

Have you read the Multi-Business Unit Model user guide? You can view it here and also watch videos of each section:

www.modano.com/resources/content_user_guides/multi_business_unit_model

There's a number of ways to add/remove business units but the easiest is by simply adding/removing categories via the Business Units Summary module within the sheet entitled Business Units, as discussed and demonstrated in this section of the user guide:

www.modano.com/resources/content_user_guides/multi_business_unit_model/business_units/adding

Modular scalable multi-business unit modeling is deceptively complicated, and the dynamic templates provided in this content add-on are intentionally generic because they're designed to be used as a foundation for the modeling of any multi-business unit business. Hence why the revenue and expenses are assumptions are simply entered as amounts by default.

For this reason, you really need to understand Modano properly if you want to effectively leverage the multi-business unit modeling content, which means completing the online training exercises and probably purchasing some support credits when you first get started.

For example, the example you provide of adding the last historical month to your business units requires you to understand the sliding doors approach to building historical & forecast models which is explained in the Historical & Forecast Model learning exercise. The way the business unit modules have been built in the Multi-Business Unit Model content add-on, the historical data is linked into each business unit via the summary section at the bottom of its sheet, which is grouped and hidden by default but can be viewed by expanding its grouped rows, as shown below for an annual historical & forecast business unit module, which also has the grouped historical columns (J - L) expanded to show this usually hidden data.

Hence, in the below example, displaying data from the last historical period is done by inserting an OFFSET-based formula referencing the historical data from the correct (i.e. last) historical period in the summary below.

There's method behind the madness with all of this stuff, you just need to persevere until you understand the many different things that are going on. If you want to really understand scalable multi-business unit modeling including historical & forecast data you will need to understand at least the following concepts:

  1. Historical & forecast modeling
  2. Mirrored modules
  3. Categories
  4. Module linking
  5. Customizing modules

For this reason, most of our users complete the online Modano Certification and then purchase support credits for their first couple of model builds to get up the curve.
