Start-Up Dynamic Template

This dynamic template is focussed on modelling a Start-Up business through a sequence of equity raisings.

Different rounds of funding allow the user to assess the impact cap raises have on the overall shape of the business, as well as the other cohorts of shareholder.

The specific modules developed for this model are:

  • Ordinary Equity (Start-Up).  This module contains category-based equity analysis that allow the user to investigate the impact of separate capital raises, issue prices, etc. The module also has its own dashboard that shows the impact of raises on each shareholder's value.
  • Multiples Valuation.  This is a simple module, with precedent links in from total revenue, EBIT, NPAT, etc.  Multiples are entered as assumptions and a valuation profile is calculated as the output.  NB: this is all periods analysis rather than forecast-only.
  • Cash Runway.  Single dashboard module.  Brings in the main cash flows and works out alternative cash balance projections based on no funding, no revenue, no nothing, etc. Also shows number of days to cash death.

This model is designed for broader strategic purposes, such as investigating 3-to-7 year funding, growth and value realisation profiles.

The attached is not for budgeting purposes. To the extent people are looking to model the detailed cash flows of a start-up, I recommend using the wider Modano monthly content. In Australia, this would need to include detailed GST, comprehensive working capital analysis, and so on.

If you have any comments or questions then feel free to add them below.

Cheers. J.

This is an impressive financial model James, I'm sure there are many start-ups out there desperately in need of the clarity that your customizations provide.

It's actually a great example of how only a few modules need to be created and/or customized to completely change the focus of a financial model. I particularly like how the Ordinary Equity (Start-Up) module tracks share numbers and changes in valuation flowing from the performance of the business over time:

This is significantly more advanced than the standard Ordinary Equity modules available in the Modano content libraries.
I'm definitely going to leverage these modules when I build my next start-up model.

Hi James,

I had started building modules with some similar characteristic and came across this thread! I noticed there is no file attachment to your post. did you originally share the three modules you mentioned in your post?

Cheers,

Campbell

Hi Campbell,

We decided to pull the models off as these are Modano 8 format, so due for a refresh.

We've also updated the content to make it more flexible and covered the other time periods (not just quarterly).

Will be releasing this as new content in the coming weeks, so will dart you a note here when up and running!

Cheers. J.

Hi James,

Sure. I think it will be extremely beneficial in this age of intense start-up activity with multiple capital raisings and valautions.
