Best/Preferred Hardware specifications for Modano performance

Hi Everyone,

Our firm is looking to upgrade our hardware systems and one of the requirements is to select parts that is best suited for analytics & modelling performance including Modano (Excel) and PowerBI.

If I had a fixed budget per system, what is the best/preferred specifications for Modano if I had to chose between say:

  • Higher CPU speed (GHz)
  • Higher CPU cores (8 vs 16) or
  • Higher RAM

TIA

Khang

Hi Khang,

I think there's a thread around laptops, which should have similar thoughts.

There are only a few variables, but the thing to think about is end use. Multi-core computations are becoming much more efficient, so my suggestion for priority is:

  • Core count (physical + hyperthread)
  • Ram (min 8gb, grab 16gb if you can)
  • CPU speed

Modano files, I think it may depend on how you build them, definitely leverages multi-core, so that's pretty crucial. PowerBI and data is either on a service or if it's desktop then the multi-core again comes in.

Hope that helps.

Hi Khang,

There's some good discussion around hardware in this older post, which remains relevant: www.modano.com/forum/laptop_recommendations_september_2021

From our experience most modern laptops will be more than powerful enough to run Modano unless you're building absolutely enormous models, which is something we generally avoid as Excel shouldn't be used to replace database programs!

At Modano we've been exclusively using HP EliteBooks for the past few years and had very few issues. They're also great value, costing less than AUD$2,500 even with the Intel Core i7 chip and 16GB of RAM. Here's my specs:

  • Processor:    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz   2.21 GHz
  • Installed RAM:    16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)
  • Device ID:    C8D02BC3-A427-43A5-9707-AA7F14A736A6
  • Product ID:    00330-50949-57334-AAOEM
  • System type:    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • Pen and touch:    No pen or touch input is available for this display

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jun & Mike for the replies.

I didn't realise there was a similar thread posted recently, it's good to see the nice 8 core specs & beefy GPU on those machines.

Further research on the interwebs also pointed to the number of cores & higher RAM being useful for 64bit applications such as Excel.

With forward compatibility in mind (usb-c ports etc) and having to balance cost, portability & specs, we opted for a smaller 14" on the Asus Expertbook B9400 with 32GB RAM & a the one thing I can't live without, a numpad!

This should be sufficient for the next 3 years until another renewal is needed.

Dear @Michael Hutchens

I noticed that you all do no have pen or touch input available.  on your rig.

When I try to mark up my Modano files with my active pen, the feature is not available, even though I have a comparable set of specifications to yours (except for the touch input)

Is there a way to turn on pen input for Modano?

Regards,

Win
