Aligning Time Series

Hi, I have saved a number of modules which were built using the Monthly time series. I now want to use those modules in a Monthly, Historical and Forecast. The message tells me that the time series are not compatible but then goes on to tell me to "Align these time series modules by editing one or both of them before re-attempting to insert the designated module". Does anyboth know how to do this?

Hi Billy,

Time series modules, and the period titles sets within them, form the foundation for the compatibility of modules based on them - e.g. you cannot build a monthly module and then insert it into a modular workbook containing an annual time series module.

Hence, each module that contains time series-based data must be built for a specific time series construct. Currently (i.e. the end of 2017), the modules within the Modano content libraries are all based on one of 8 time series modules, which you can view here.

If you've built custom modules based on the monthly time series module, you will need to rebuild them in order to use them in modular workbooks containing an annual time series module. This sounds painful, but in most cases the following steps prove pretty quick and easy:

  1. Open your monthly module (or the workbook containing it).
  2. Create a new empty module (Modano tab, Modules group, New menu, Empty module).
  3. Insert an annual time series module into it (Modano tab, Insert menu, Time Series Module).
  4. Add whatever module components are located within the monthly module - e.g. assumptions, outputs, etc.
  5. Change the number of years in your new annual model to the number of years within the monthly model by changing the Term (Years) assumption within the Time Series Assumptions module component.
  6. Copy and paste the entire rows from within each module component within the monthly module into its corresponding module component within the annual model.
  7. Amend any resulting broken formulas and make any adjustments necessary to make the annual module reflect its annual periodicity.

We've used these steps many times to create multiple time series compatible versions of modules after we've created the first one. The question you should ask yourself is whether there's already an existing module based on your required time series module which can be edited more easily than taking these steps to convert a module... It's always about what's most efficient.

One of our team can always walk you through this process via an online meeting if you'd like to request support.

I hope this helps.
