Cell & Sheet Naming Conventions
Report Abuse

Can we have Naming conventions used  (LU_TS_Mth, DD_TS_Fin_Yr_End_Mth, WC_Ann_TO, HL_DEBTORS_OUT) with description in one place, in resources/documentation/Help section of this site. It will make much easier to make changes or refer to cells and make Modnao Model flexible to use. or whether there is any list available at one place so that one can refer.

Further same is the problem with name of the sheets.

Is there any rule or principle to remember them. Or there is list of all of them which Modano uses.

Thanks

Hi Ameer,

By default, Modano implements the sheet naming and range naming conventions within the Best Practice Spreadsheet Modeling Standards. You can read about how they work by clicking on the following links:

  • Sheet Naming
  • Range Naming

Importantly, you don't need to use these conventions, so feel free to rename sheets and range names as you see fit.

Having said that, the sheet naming and range naming conventions, if you read the reasoning behind them, offer a very simple and powerful way of standardizing the way sheets and range names are used, such that it's very easy to determine the type of each sheet (e.g. time series, cover, etc.) and whether or not it contains assumptions, simply by looking at its suffix. And for range names, the type of the underlying range that's been named can be identified by looking at the range name prefix. There's a lot of method behind it all...

Modano doesn't force any of this, so if you'd rather use old-school, non-structured sheet and range names, just switch off the unwanted check boxes when naming, as shown before to rename a time series (blank) assumptions sheet from 'TS_BA' to 'Time Series':
